I would like to start removing the neck and bridge of my build just to get things moving along while I put together my space to build. my question...can start doing this in an uncontrolled environment? I was thinking I could keep my case somewhat controlled and store the guitar in there when i'm not working on it. I don't plan on doing any glue work until I have my space but would like to get a jump on it all.

good or bad idea?

also....whats an easy way to measure my deflection on the top? I think its probably a good idea to know this before pulling the bridge lol.

It sound like the guitar is already built so other than treating the guitar properly with regard to humidity, I see no difference with having the neck and bridge on or off while putting together your work space.

I spent about 45 minutes on Friday and built this deflection jig from parts I had laying around in my shop. I just set it on the edges of the lower bout and add weight. Just for safety I use soft diving weight for a load. I could imagine somehow spilling a hard 5 lb weight on my top.

I got it apart very cleanly. Sanded the top back to new. Next step is to see if I can't get the cracks in the back fixed

John, how do you spread out the load a little on your top so that the indicator probe doesn't dent your top? I suppose you could let it push on a small block or coin; something of that nature to spread the 5 pounds over a little area,

Good point! I just made it last week. On just a top I will probably just use a small piece of wood. My plan for the tool first off was to measure my completed guitars on the bridge to start to make some long term observations.

Oh, that makes sense. I didn't think about measuring at the bridge. I'll be interested to hear if top deflection correlates well with resonance frequency when you get around to your existing guitars. I just measure the body resonance on my latest which sounds more open and louder than the others, and it is about a half step lower than my others,

Thank god I got them somewhat back together!
I should've able to push it up in spots from underneath and pull it together from the sides and CA it together. Thoughts?

I did one similar to that although it was in multiple pieces although the guitar was falling apart so I went ahead and took the back off. Got it glued back together and then put some cleats on it. There are some gaps that will have to be filled when it is time to refinish it.

Nice work.
I really don't want to take the back off because I'd like to keep the original binding so i'm gonna try to do it with it on. It will be French polish when all is said and done. I'm thinking any imperfections can be filled during finish. I do have a brace to fix though. Any thought on that? Maybe add the missing piece?

No, I wouldn't remove the back on yours. I only removed mine because it was mostly off anyway and was in really bad shape.

I would probably want to replace the brace but have not tried to do that in a closed box yet. Hopefully someone with more experience will jump in here.
