I remember your jointer issues, and seems like you were not having any luck with a plane and shooting board for joining tops and backs Around income tax time every year I like to add something to the shop/pile this year it was a Fender Precision Bass and this Veritas PVM11 shoot board plane. It still take some finessing but wow the skewed PVM11 cuts like butta and after an hour this afternoon I have a handle on it. Thats a set of Honduran Rosewood pretty hard but it makes nice shavings.

I've been eyeing one up, however, I no longer bother with he plane and just put sandpaper on the bed of my 1200$ jointer and yes the fence. Lol. Good results every time...

That looks like a very nice shooting board too!

I've had my eye on one of those. If it works as good as it looks like it should then I'll probably get one. I like to joint my backs and tops with a plane. And, yeah, I can do it with my Record #4 but that PVM11 looks like it would be fun to use.

Well try it before you buy it I can bring it to a meeting sometime.
I can shorten up the shooting board quite a bit too.

I haven't a fraction of the experience you guys have, but I abandoned the tablesaw/jointer/level/etc techinques looking for the easy way out. This was a purchase that I will never regret as it works so effortlessly.

I really looked hard at the Lie Nielsen but the Veritas PVM11 blade was the tie breaker, that stuff just keeps on cutting. Let's see a couple pics of your shooting board.

I haven't even made the proper shooting board (yet).
All I did was elevate the pieces and made a positive stop.
I was having success "freehand" and didn't think much about the board.
Included with the plane are nice plans for a shooting board.

I know there are a lot of thoughts on this. I use my jet jointer to get it close. Then glue sandpaper to the table. Run along fence and it's a great joint.

I also cut down my shooting board. I'm interested if anyone has another style/method...... this is working very well

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I really liked that idea; using the whole blade and shearing action. So I tried one, but the blade never seemed to be completely Square so I gave up. Maybe I did something wrong......... probably something in the wedges. I would try another one if I could figure it out because I use my shooting board so often.

Got a chance to try this out this afternoon at our luthier meeting. Works great. Requires a different technique then shooting with a bench plane. It's actually easier. It's on my upgrade list now
