Here is a video of an automated kerfed lining fixture I just batched up. It work for both regular and reverse linings.

Sorry about the noisy bearing... I've since put some oil on that thing.

Nicely Done! Can you vary the spacing of the cuts?

Nicely done Michael!

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

That's pretty cool. You seen Keith Mackensie's version? Chris Paulick posted this a while back. Very similar designs.

Mike,

My inspiration is based on Keith's design. I probably watched the YouTube video 30 times, studying the motion of the fixture. I probably thought about it another 3-4 days before drawing it so I could so I could cut the parts on my cnc machine. It was a very fun problem!

Chris, the presenter of Keith's design it pretty toasted, if you hadn't noticed.....

Chris always looks that way. You probably wouldn't want to see me in a video. ;)

Thank you for attributing design to Keith. I'm sure he'd be flattered to see your interpretation. It's good work.

I love watching him set his beer down on the base of the band saw after struggling to get through the introduction....

I could never get Keith to provide the design. But, I'm sure you could sell the cut parts if reasonable. I'd entertain your quote.

I'd have to see if the fixture would fit other 14" saws before offering up the design for sale.

Our machine is a stand alone tool -- an inexpensive Delta 10" was converted. The basic plan for this device has been around for a long time and can be found at frets.com

That's fantastic! I use kerfed linings sometimes and it's one of the only things I outsource because the time and frustration involved in doing it is simply not economically worth it. In fact I mostly do solid linings because it's a lot easier.

So if you produce any for sale let me know and I can at least help you pay off that cool jig!

I can just hear Raymond Scott's Powerhouse, the music of busy machines that we all know from the old Warner Brothers cartoons.

Nice! It's sort of steampunk. You could somehow have the finished one trigger the next one in the chute and let'r run!

How thick is the web? is it flat or w shaped?

The web is about .020" thick though it's fully adjustable. The first batch I made (50 pieces) has got a round-over just like reverse kerfed linings only they are cut like standard linings. You can make reversed or regular simply by flipping the piece.

I set up the stroke mechanism on ours using a cam action. There's a spring loaded buffer bar to compensate for wear and also allow fine adjust using shims --- you can see my very high tech card stock and masking tape shim on the slide stop. I should really confess that this device was built several years ago as a concept model -- the principles involved and the design road map put forth by Frank Ford where so good that we just continue to use this in production.
