im installing a mop rosette tomorrow on a sitka spruce top and i plan on using thin ca glue. i know have to use shellac before you use the ca glue so it doesn't discolor the wood. can i just use the shellac in an arousal can and spray the entire area after i rout the channel before i glue in the rosette?

The endgrain is the most important to seal, so wiping it on is probably better. If you spray, make sure you don't just shoot straight down, but go at an angle to hit the walls of the channel.

Shaking the can helps with the arousal.

I used the aerosol on three rosettes recently and it worked well. +1 for Dennis comment about ensuring the hit the walls.

I generously apply clear lacquer with a brush same as done at the Taylor factory --- better safe than sorry.

Yup, I'm with Ken (although I use shellac) and just squirt it on from my bottle of shellac, then run a small paint brush around the channel several times. the end grain sucks up the shellac pretty quick. Dry and ready to fit within 10 mins.

Not an issue for MOP, but do you seal wooden rosettes prior to CA? I've had severe staining on some bleached anigre veneer from CA. Or do you even use CA on wooden rosettes?

We spray the rosette area before milling the channels to help minimize tearout (a sharp bit seems to be the best insurance), then flow 1 lb cut shellac into the channels with a micro pipette. After wiping out the excess with the clean corner of a paper towel, we let that dry, then repeat. This avoids building a film in the channel and lets us mill the channels to net size for best fit. The Zinnser spray shellac in a can is super blonde dewaxed 1 lb cut, and as mentioned can be sprayed into a clean dose cup or - apparently - something called an arousal cup, which sounds like a really interesting thing to have handy. An airbrush or clean brush works with fresh mixed shellac, and The Shellac Shack sells platina and super blonde for about half the price of most other vendors.

The second rosette I attempted, the CA discolored the spruce because sprayed shellac failed to seal the end grain completely. : (

I think it's hard to spray enough of it on the 90 degree walls of the channel without spraying it everywhere. I keep plastic bottle caps around to use as containers for small amounts of fluid; I've sprayed Zissner's into a cap and then applied it with a brush or saturated Q-tip.

All my rosettes were always wood with only several exceptions and I used Titebond original. No need to seal anything with Titebond original.

If can use TB another benefit is it will swell the rosette and channel a bit and fill tiny gaps. 0 gaps makes for a more enjoyable finishing process.

If I'm doing a rosette that I can easily get in and out prior to gluing I will always use TB. Otherwise CA glue.

I do like Martin duco cement for the B/W and tite bond with the pearl. I don't use CA . we all have our methods and the can all work.
