Hi Folks,

I saw a recommendation here for the end mills from bqtool.com. I ordered the 1/16, 3/32 and 1/8 bits for routing out rosette channels. Any tips for using them? My setup will be the Stewmac base and circle jig with a Dremel 4200. What would be the recommended speed for the Dremel? Full speed? Any other tips? How well will they plunge?

run them full speed. Also cut from the center out for a clean line. I use a climb cut to finish

Thanks. I was hoping to use the 1/16 bit and do the following.

1) Cut the outer ring on the wood that I plan to use for the rosette ring.
2) Move the Dremel to the soundboard and cut out the outer ring. No adjustment to the circle jig.
3) Cut out the inner ring on the wood that I plan to use for the rosette ring.
4) Move the Dremel to the soundboard and cut out the inner ring. No adjustment to the circle jig.
5) Place the wood ring into the soundboard and test fit that 1/16 purfling is snug around the rosette ring.
6) Glue it up with titebond.

This would require plunging the end mill into the cut and the end mill would be cutting the outside edges. Bad idea?

I use a high quality circular veneer cutter from L/N to lay out my cut lines for the inner ring, the outer ring , and the soundhole . I also use mini end mills and a dremel with a DIY circle jig or and else a ryobi laminate trimmer for cutting the depth of the ring using a 1/4in carbide bit..On softwoods .I use the highest speed

I may be wrong, But I think your rosette would be 1/8 (1/16 per side) smaller than the the cut out in the sound board.

Let me make sure I'm clear and then if you're right you can tell me I'm crazy :)

The 1/16 bit would indeed cut the wood ring 1/16th smaller than the channel in the soundboard. The 1/16th purfling would fill that void as a ring on the inside and outside of the wood ring. Is that correct or am I in for a big surprise!

This might help, Brad. If you lay it out on paper, or do a test piece on a scrap of ply or MDF, you'll see that when you cut your rosette ring, the diameter of your endmill has to move that distance inside from the outer and inner edges to cut your channel. Mine was done with a 1/8" down spiral bit.
