Hello all,

I have a nice board which is warped/cuped. It is about 1/16 inch thick.

Do you have any tips on how should I deal with the warping? I don't want to throw away the piece, which is large enough to build a guitar bottom.

Generally, once it's at the correct thickness, the braces and attaching it to the rims will keep the shape.

I've sprayed a mist of water on the cupped side -- that tends to make the board flatten for a while, long enough to resaw.

However that board is total slab cut and its going to warp even more when thinned --- personally not something I'd use for guitar.

cup side --- crown side

The cupped side has shrunk because it has less moisture content than the crown side

Definitely more flatsawn than I'd like to see, but, people do get away with using wood like that. Again, once it's thinned, braced, and glued to the box, it might be ok.

Thanks. Gonna thin it. Glue both parts to get the width and see what happens. It is hard to find quarter sawn wood around here, but since it is for my first instrument I can afford to make lots of mistakes. Lol

Since this is your first, and the wood is at hand, I see no reason to not press on and thickness this wood and reevaluate. At the very worst, you will get practice. How do you plan to thickness this wood? I used a flatsawn and cupped (though not that mmuch) walnut board for a back once and had no problem. I used a thickness sander and by the time I started getting into the range of final thickness the drum had no problem holding the back flat to the table while it sanded it. I flipped it over for every pass. Once I was at the final thickness the plate was still a bit cupped, one side cupping one way and the other book-matched half cupping the other way. Once the radiused braces were glued on and the back glued on to the arch of the rim it was fine.

That will be more challenging with the sides that thick and the cups going opposite directions. But like I said, the worst that will happen is that you will get practice. . .

In theory, I would have to thickness down to 0.2" to get it flat, which is my desired thickness.

.200 is very thick for a back, unless you mean that .200 is the thickness you want to join it at., with intent of thinning further...

Yes. I think it is going to be a bit difficult to glue something thinner that that. The final thickness I am aiming for is about 1/8''.
