Hello all,

I just joined up, largely in order to get connected to luthiers who might want to know about some guitar top wood that I will be putting on ebay sometime this winter. Years ago, I thought I might switch careers into building classical guitars, and I collected Western Red Cedar and Sitka Spruce from the north coast of BC with that in mind. Well, time moves on, and the guitar building career never happened. Now here I am in my mid sixties, with no chance of using the wood I have had stashed for all these years, and it is time to move on.

I have something like 200 or more top blanks, both Sitka Spruce and Red Cedar that I would like to sell. All the wood was salvaged, split into billets, and resawn into top blanks by me personally. The longitudinal grain runout is uniformly negligible since split billets were used, and the wood was all resawn initially as wedges to achieve perfect or near perfect quartersawn orientation. Top blanks were end grain sealed, and air dried. All of this wood was processed (where did the time go?) over twenty years ago, and has been stored in my carport attic since then. It is very nicely seasoned. Tap tones are impressive. The last guitar I built from the cedar was described by a late friend, who owned among other guitars a Ramirez 1a from the 1970's, as the best guitar he ever played in his life.

For those who care about eco friendly wood, all wood was salvaged, no live trees were cut down by me in collecting it. Virtually all the cedar came from one log that I found partially buried in the edge of a logging road on Haida Gwaii. It was a large stem probably 5 feet in diameter, with a large hollow center. It is impossible to say whether it was alive when it was knocked down and buried, but it was certainly long dead when I found it. All the spruce was taken from one log found attached to a root wad left behind by a flood in the Kitimat river.

Anyone interested in this wood can pm me with their contact information and I will give them a heads up when I get the ebay sales organized. Any advice on where else I might wish to put this notice would be appreciated. You never know what I might miss.

If the nature of this message is contrary to forum rules, I apologize, no mischief was intended.

Cheers,

Allan Edie

Hi Allan. Selling is usually done in the classifieds forum by individuals. For $11.88, you can sell your tops to those who also have a subscription, as well as on ebay. On the down side, you are selling to a smaller market here, but you won't have any ebay fees. I hope you decide to hang around the OLF. Experienced builders are always welcome around here!

Alex

I bet you would not have a problem selling 200 tops in the classified either and that way you don't have to deal with eBay. Low post count doesn't help but if you have a website or some other way of letting us know who you are that would help too. I'd certainly be interested in some tops. As far as PM goes, each post has a PM button at the bottom of it. Click that and off you go.

Wow,

I have been replying to the multiple PMs, but just checked back here and found a bunch more interest. Good thing I checked, and thanks everyone for your interest. A few of you have already heard back from me, but some of you haven't. For those that haven't if you send me an email to agedie AT gmail.com, I will put you on my email contact list so I can send you any updates directly. I am getting the tops organized, but will not be ready to sell for a while yet. It turns out that many are still needing the final bookmatch resaw, or conversion from wedge form to flat. I have some work to do on tools before I can get that done, but it will come together sometime in the near future.

Thanks for the heads up regarding the classified section here, that is a very good idea. Ebay can be a bit of a pain, and is expensive. As far as the feedback here is concerned, I can let people know my ebay ID (allaned), my facebook ID (Allan Edie - not very active there, but there is a picture of this old fart), and skype ID (allanedie). I have >100 Ebay feedbacks, every one positive, many enthusiastically, so that might help. Also, if anyone wants to actually talk to me (strange concept these days, I know), I can be reached on Skype or at 250dash847dash9510.

Anyway, thanks again everyone for your interest, and I look forward to another batch of email contacts.

Best regards,

Allan Edie

Allan,

The classified listing is not just a good idea, but I think the proper way to interact in this forum. Technically, you are not supposed to advertise free. It seems that the owner of the forum has been generous in not deleting your posts.

Ouch, I didn't know that there was such a rule, I certainly had no intention of behaving poorly. My apologies. I will now have to think about how I want to move forward.

Thanks for the heads up,

Best regards,

Allan Edie

I think it's $0.99 per month to register for the classifieds. That's the next best thing to free, and certainly less that ebay. Why don't you PM the administrator of the forum for details. For all I know he as already seen your postings and decided to let you by. I cannot speak for him.

Good luck.

Allan the best way to move forward would be to post your stuff in the classifieds section.
Selling out side the classifieds is really unfair to our sponsors. Especially since we are talking
hundreds of sets.

I realize that keeping a site like this going takes money and effort, and appreciate the issue of fairness to sponsors. I really didn't intend my posts to be contrary to site rules or disrespectful of the much appreciated and important contributions made by sponsors. Thanks very sincerely for allowing my posts at all, I have received an excellent response, and am very grateful for the contacts that this thread has generated.

The majority of the response I have received about my wood has been from the participants in this website. In recognition of this, I will list most of the wood here first. The cost of advertising here was never an issue for me as it is extremely reasonable. My problem is that I do not know what the wood is worth, so the auction format might have helped me sort that out. My feedback on Ebay would also have established some credibility, which might have been helpful.

Anyway, thanks for the input, and thanks again for allowing this thread in the first place, I really do appreciate it.

Best regards,

Allan Edie
