I was preparing an ebony fingerboard blank for use on a guitar recently. It had grey streaks in it. So I decided to try some black fingerboard dye I just got from Stewmac. This stuff is actually labeled "Fiebing's Leather Colors". It turned the fingerboard a nice even black, but it also caused it to cup quite dramatically.

I'd like to know if anyone else has had a similar experience and what would you do to counter the cupping.

Wet the other side of the board. This would have been better done before applying the dye but nothing to lose in applying it now. When I glue a fretboard with HHG I always damp the top surface just before gluing the fretboard.

Has the fb been fully dimensioned? If it is still in the rough, you can rip it down the middle, plane the cupped surfaces flat, joint the ripped edges, and then glue them back together.
