I heard an interview with a resident of the big island on NPR and he stated that there was a lot of downed trees. My thoughts were exactly like those above! I hate to see mature trees cut down and for hurricanes to mess up people's days, (I'm a Florida guy after all) but if a tree falls in the woods... Make a guitar from it!

Who cares about the injured, the homeless, folks that lost everything...

Well, if you want to get serious - I've read about 10 stories published about the recent storms and the results are: 1 dead hiker, darn few injured, homes without power - several thousand, tens of thousands inconvenienced, some homes damaged. Nearly every story reported that the islands "got off light" considering they just endured an earthquake followed immediately by 2 low-grade hurricanes, and an election where the sitting governor got his butt whipped.

That about cover it? In 2 weeks they'll all be back in business minus some trees. Sorry about the hiker, but he was stupid to go hiking in a hurricane, dontcha think?

Yeah, I wouldn't joke about it if the storms had been worse. But even if they had been, it's better to scavenge the remains than to kill trees that could have lived for hundreds more years, providing homes for wildlife and oxygen for us.

Well, seems you had to be "prompted" to check for death, injury and devastation. I have no doubt the "Vulture Capitalists" will descend on Hawaii, lots of bucks to be made on repair and rebuilding. I'm sure they will snap up those trees too, at rock bottom prices, but you will see retail at the suppliers.

I wouldn't count on it. Most of the damage is in the Puna district of the big island.
From the videos on the news, it looks like lots of Albizia...google Albizia tree...its a weed.
Winds may not have been strong enough to knock down healthy koa.
I would be more concerned about the damage to puna buds...almost harvest season.

The woman drowned in Kauai on the Kalalau trail. Happens sometimes, especially to tourists who try to cross swollen streams on their way back out. Happens on sunny days that rain up in the mountain. Most of the trails were closed during the storm period...they could have been backpacking and trying to get out before the hurricane hit.

Except for the big island, it was just a tropical storm for most of us. It hardly rained where I live.

Yeah, it is a little odd, though the news report I was watching, had everyone safe and standing amongst a pile of downed trees.
