I was thinking about making a thickness caliper using a dial indicator. I found this one on Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/TÜRLEN-DIAL-INDICATOR-SPEC-0-001/dp/B0043F779K/ref=cm_cr_pr_sims_t

It looks like it would work. What do you think? I'll have to put together a caliper. I'd like to see some shop made calipers so I can figure out how to make one. Can I see some photos?
Thanks,
Steve

Actually, this one doesn't measure thick enough because I want it for arch top tops. I'll have to choose another. But, I still want to see some calipers that others have put together...

Mine is two pieces of 3/4" plywood laminated together and a Mitutoyo dial indicator.
Due to wood movement it has to be zeroed every time I use it.

I was going to make one but realized I could get an extremely nice one used for very little. Mine is just like this one:

I love it, it works perfectly.

I made this from plywood, works well enough. I don't know if would've borthered if I'd known I could get one for as little as the one Burton showed, though...

Made mine before I got allergic to Coco. Used the parts from my old broken violin dial caliper that I had for 25 years...

Nice fix Haans!

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Here's my version of a thickness caliper. Not as pretty as some but it works for me.

Steve, this isn't what you have in mind, but it works for me. When I contemplated mine, I was not concerned so much with measuring thickness as with visualizing thickness. My reasoning was that I would do further scraping and sanding after the box was closed, so I just wanted to get in neighborhood, so to speak. I tried to make the tool pretty, and have never seen the need to supplement it with a dial caliper. But that's me. You might want to be more precise. Here ya' go:

I was going to make one from plans I found online here:

http://sd-1.archive-host.com/membres/up ... ISSEUR.pdf

When I went to eBay to buy a dial indicator I found a Kafer K200 graduating caliper for the price of a chinese dial indicator...
