I was commissioned to build a pair of brw guitars for a fellow to give to his sons for a gift. One right handed, one left handed. I am trying to get these finished before the holidays, but we will see if that is possible. I was given creative license to do what I thought would make beautiful, great sounding guitars, he wanted the best, so I chose brw backs and sides, sinker redwood tops with light figure, Adirondack spruce primary bracing with sinker redwood secondary braces.
I will probably bind these with either curly koa or possibly maple for a nice contrast.. not sure yet.
Anyhow, here is the process so far...

Have your felt any temptation to play around with them and vary something on one to see what comes out tonally?
Bob
Oh, and yeh, they are nice :)

Now that's what you call a couple of nice presents, no need to exchange them at a Boxing Day sale. [:Y:]

James, these are the first ones I have made with this particular combo, its gotta be great, though. Just thumping the bodies makes a killer sound. Cant wait to see how they turn out!

Thanks, Bob! I used to do that quite a bit when I was learning what did what. I would build two identical guitars but slightly alter one from the other just to see what happened. These are pretty much identical, though, other than one being a lefty.

The purpleheart "go bars" work great! I may need to start marketing them! :D Purpleheart has one of the highest bending strengths of any wood I have seen, and will not split when you flex it. Much more downward force than fiberglass.

Beauties.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Excellent looking work Aaron. Thanks for posting a build thread. They are always fun to watch, no matter how many I have read.

Beautiful guitars! And you used Sinker Redwood with the rosewood, my favorite combination. Do you have any recordings of those two guitars? I would love to hear the sound. And I've been wanting to make a go bar. Interesting using the purpleheart strips.

Thank you! These are not finished yet, so recordings are yet to come.

Hey Aaron those guitars look great.

When you use the tung oil for finish, are you pore filling at all? If so, what do you use with the tung oil?
