I'm looking for a 1/2" either down or up sheer spiral flush cut bit. Looking around online, they seem to be hideously expensive. I found spiral bits for cheap, but the flush cuts were in the 100$ + range. Seems like too much for just a router bit. Anyone know a good source?

Rockler has 3/4" sheer flush trim for $35. I have one and happy with results.

Seems more expensive than I'd hoped, but I guess it pays to pay sometimes. I'll just bite the bit bullet and get the Cadillac....

You could perhaps use a high speed steel one from onsrud, #40-138 for 18.70 from onsrud.com. Its a lot less than the solid carbide.
I bought the hss steel bit in 1/4 and 1/8 downcuts to use for binding and rosette. I have cut my rosette channel, I thought it did well. Haven't tried it for binding.
It doesn't seem to me cutting really shallow depths would generate much heat, so I am unsure you really need the carbide. I think the 1/4 inch downspiral, 2 flute bit was like 11 bucks in HSS(that I bought).
The onsrud website is not the best, but if you look around there, you can find a pdf of their bit catalog-under resources-2012 production cutting tools.
I figured the hss steel would be fine for cutting .060 depths in my spruce top or 085 in mahogany.

Specifically what I want it for is for preshaping the sides and bottoms of braces on a router table before glue up...

I haven't been disappointed with Freud or Lee Valley bits. I've gotten a few from a Canadian tool chain, BusyBee Tools, and they have been pretty good too.
