I received the purfling. It's amazing how China can send packages like this to places like the US for $10 dollars because if I ordered the same qty of material from Stewmac it would cost them over 20 dollars to ship it to Taiwan, not to mention the order total will also exceed 300 dollars.

Here is a picture of the purfling with Stewmac (from Gurian) purfling next to it. The curved piece is the Stewmac purfling while the straight piece is the Chinese purfling. There is no difference whatsoever except the black is a little thinner while the white is a little thicker. The white is a little off-white (more yellowish tint) but at about 1/10th the cost of what Stewmac charges, I ain't complaining. The herringbone purfling is also really cheap and pretty good. I've also bought some kerfed lining, I wish they had reverse but at the price they're charging, I can't complain.

I've also started building a prototype cajon... the hope is I can make cajon on the side because it takes very little time for me to make them, so I can sell it at a price that people might actually consider... This one I painted in Fender style sunburst.

For as cheap as China can sell guitars, you should be able to get plenty of low coast parts from them.

Nice burst on the box. Way to go!!!

Did the typhoon cause you any trouble?

Typhoon only caused some rains, most of it down south but for "the most powerful storm in 50 years" it did very little.

It's nice if Chinese part producers sells on ebay, because I have no way of finding things otherwise (alibaba.com is only for large scale purchase). Honestly it's hard to be Chinese prices... I mean stuff like kerfed lining and bwb purflings should require very little manual work and can be easily mass produced, which makes me wonder why Americans charge so much for them. I mean social progress is going to China too and soon even manual labor will be expensive there, hence the need for automation.

Now if I can get Sapele from Chinese suppliers... oh wait there's already someone within 10km of me that has it. The only problem is the wood is mostly outdoor, so I have no idea what it will do. At least LMI guarantees them to be free of serious defect.

I thought the same thing about hurricane Sandy. I was in my garage lacquering an ukulele while the"storm" was going on. It was windy, but it barely rained. I went for a walk around my neighborhood during the storm to see if anything had blown down.
My opinion changed rapidly when I finally saw the destruction the storm surge had done on the news.

Excellent job on the cajon. The burst looks great. Also, thanks for the info on the purfling. My binding jig does not use bearings, so I can adjust to any size binding or purfling I want.

I didn't think about this, but then again I'm using luthiertool's jig so I'm not worried about bearing size. I thought the bearings, if you get all of them have a .01" increment? That should be enough to fit anything...

Ya, and do the kerfed linings look as nice as SM and LMI? How big is the kerf? Traditional kerfs are about .040" which is kind of tough without a special blade.

From the same seller that sold the purfling... they have uke and guitar linings. I didn't measure the kerf but needless to say it works far better than my homemade ones. I think the kerf is about what a standard carbide tipped tablesaw blade is. It looks nice enough and I could care less what the kerf is, because no one is going t notice that and I doubt it would have any effect on the sound. You can get a .040" kerf with a bandsaw by the way. As far as look goes, it's about the same as SM/LMI.

A couple of years ago I made a connection with a Korean purfling maker at the Calif. NAMM show. I bought quite a bit, because I also sell some to local hobbyists, etc. I got the usual B/W, B/W/B, etc, in different thicknesses. It has turned out to be a mistake. The purfling looks nice, but easily delaminates during bending. It can't be bent on edge for side lines at all. For probably 30 years I imported purfling from Europe and never had any bending or delamination problems. On the Korean stuff, the black fiber turned out to be much more like paper than what we usually see as fiber. Beware!

You're talking about the Stewmac purfling? Because it does that too... it's a little flexible though but it still delaminates. In fact several came in already delaminated at the end.

Link to the cheap purfling...

These will still bend as well as the stewmac ones, although a little heat will help when bending them into tight curves. For edge bending you will need to sandwich them between slats and bend multiple pieces at a time.
