There has been a daily attack of spammers bad bots registering. In the past I approve them all and delete them once their motives are clear.
Not any more. If you do not convince me you are a human with good will, I will not approve your account.

What this requires is that you fill in all the registration fields with a real name, not a handle. Try to make your form seem as though you want to be a member and would like to share in our community.
Otherwise, I hit the delete key and your account goes bye bye.

Thanks!
Lance

I wish all members changed their handles to real names. Last time this came up a lot of us changed but there are lots of newer members using handles.

As the administrator of a different (non-guitar) forum, I can attest to the frustrating, endless and often thankless task it is to keep spammers off the boards.

Thanks, Lance!

How does one do that Fred? I went to change this in my account settings but my username (that which I understand to be my handle) was not free for editing?

Doug, you should be able to go to the (User Control Panel). Then (Profile), then (Edit Account Settings).
Once there, update your username and click submit.

Lance, that box is not editable for me. An iOS thing perhaps?

My first thought was that this was going to be a ton of work for Lance, but then I realized it will probably save a ton of spam removal time. I like the idea of having to post a couple of sentences to prove that you are legit, but it should be clearly stated why that is needed for registration.

I too prefer real names.

I know that there are a lot of people living in NYC, but I don't think there are THAT many Tonies.

I doubt it is much more than half the population. . .

That's funny, I didn't realize he did commercials for car dealerships. In my part of the country, he did commercials for the gas company.

It won't let me change mine either. Here's what it looks like, if that helps.

Lance - looks like your plan is working perfectly to keep out spammers. NOT.

Definitely. Like "Tony in NYC". We know there is more than one Tony in NYC, but there is only ONE real Tony in NYC. Know wut I mean, Vern?

I was about to go change my name until I read this. Now the name stays.

At last count, the population of NY City was comprised of 75% Tonys, 10% Joeys, 10% Vinnys, and 5% other dumb names. I didn't call them dumb, the census taker, a fella by the name of Anthony J. Vincent did. Don't shoot the messenger. Oh, and who would like to guess what his middle name was?

I stand corrected! I was basing my numbers on Tony's household (which is right at 50%). I see now the error of my ways. I wouldn't want everyone to think the population of St. Louis was 50% adult, 25% preschooler and 25% infant (all given other dumb names).

I was once told that most of the Tonies in NYC were named that because they arrived with signs that said "To NY."
