Does that back really look like a tree trunk with small branches on it or dod you inlay those branches? That is super cool looking and the top is like the tree's canopy. I dig the shape of the body too, sexy curves.

The branches look like they're inlaid if you look close. I'm gonna say they're just inlays to make it look more like a tree :) plus they're not quite book matched ;)

Im sure they are inlays. I really like the play on what nature has already created for you in that set. I love using interesting pieces of wood in my pieces, (cabinets, boxes, etc) that resemble things from nature or something similar. I typically don't play off it like you've done but use what has been generously given to me by mother nature. I'm working on a piece right now that is going to utilize a spalted birch board that has a pattern of a fire burning. It is really nice once I got to the usable part of the board. Im now letting it rest as the board was twisted something awful before I started.

Cool. :) With the right bridge and a double pickguard, the front could be turned into a tree moth. :D

I have never seen bracing like that. Where does this idea come from?

Jeff is always creating and innovating. Guitars built by him a year will not be the same as those today. It is his curiosity and courage to challenge those perceived boundaries that resulted in the amazing unique guitars he has built. A good example is the use of hardwood for top plate braces instead of the widely advocated softwood. To Jeff, wood is imperfectly consistent. He believes in the ways guitar are made rather than depending on the inherent properties of wood in building fine sounding guitars. To assume that certain widely used tonewoods will result in quality sounding guitars is something Jeff stays clear of. He adopts the same philosophy in every part of the guitars he has built. Invariably the designs or methods applied by Jeff are rarely or not seen used by the commons.

The back is looking great. Just the kind of thing I like to see, taking natural wood grain imagery and adding the last few details to make it an artwork and not just a pretty piece of wood :) I have a similar looking set, although I was planning to use it as a volcano rather than a tree

Very cool rosette as well.

You've got some guts using that set as a soundboard! What's the weight before and after bracing? Seems like it would be rather heavy in order to be stiff enough for a bracing pattern like that... I was actually thinking abot using my volcano set as a soundboard, but had mostly given up on the prospect due to the high damping, and floppiness even while thick and heavy. But maybe it is possible after all. I'll be looking forward to hearing how this one sounds Eat Drink

And hardwood bracing? What species, achihua? Is it really as stiff/light as spruce?

Wow, that seems very thin. I've tapped some mango before and it sounded like cardboard....and that was at 1/4" thick! I'm impressed that the guitar sounds so good! Great job!

There's not much wrong with the sound (and looks) of that guitar in the soundclip. [clap] [:Y:]

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.
