I've used probably 6 or 7 different hand cutter purfling type tools in my time. $299 of a joke. I think that is just about the worst I've ever seen. Such a poor design. You can tell that Holtey has never cut purfling channels. No need to complicate such a simple tool with such a simple function. The handle is completely superfluous. The Strad design of 350 years ago is way better than that. Actually my 'popsicle' stick method (cost: a couple of dollars) is way better also!

Bit of an overkill for sure, but it's a nice looking tool. The little micro-adjusters are certainly a step up from the norm. I wonder if a handle like that works well. Seems like it could be awkward.

How do you use this tool? Do you cut the entire channel with it or just score the wood and then cut the channel with a router setup?

Had the Sloane too. I thought it would be useful for cleanup around the neck mortise but I didn't find it to be that useful. I sold it, hope the new owner likes it better.

Depends how strict your definition of 'luthier tools' is. The Veritas planes are awesome, and every nice hand-tool I use in guitar building except my diamond fret file and string lifter are from Lee Valley.

That place is a complete trap if you walk into the store; almost impossible to walk away with your money intact. I've only been to three of them, but the Halifax store is especially well designed in terms of making sure you leave poorer than when you entered.

It's just a Gramil with a handle that changes angles and twin blades.

You could use one of those things, or do what I'm doing, which is to use a CNC to probe the perimeter of the instrument to establish all the critical points, and then cut the channels as needed. It's easy once you try it.
