Okay I use the old style pore fillers like pore-o-pac still and it works well. I want to give the epoxy filling a try but have seen many mentions of Sytem Three or Zpoxy brands. Which ones am I looking for? There are various types that they each sell so what ones? Searching back post you see the brand names mentioned but not the exact ones. I have noticed in woodworking catalogs that system three sells a Mirrorcoat epoxy finish that's for bars and tables. Anyone tried this?...Mike

Mike, I used the Zpoxy on my last two guitars to pore fill and I loved it. Your looking for the Zpoxy finishing resin. It'll say PT-40 on the box, which I believe is their product number. I can't comment on the other as I've never used it. But you can't go wrong with the Zpoxy.

WEST is an option. Have a read of this.

I use system 3's sb112 with the fumed silica filler. I like it because it is near water white, z-post is not. It its sensitive to proper mix ratio though, more than the others.

If you are in a rush Z-poxy is the quickest cure before sanding can be done. West and System 3 are a fair amount slower, I found that 24 hours between coating and level sanding was a safe cure time. As you will see in some of my comments in Trevor's link my current preference is West 105/207. If you are happy with the product you are using why change, I personally have not yet found a product that I love, but at least for me the epoxy products are less messy and less bother than the other fillers I tried

One caveat when sanding epoxy. Uncured epoxy is more of a sensitizer than fully cured epoxy. I do veneer laminations with West system epoxy and have found it best to leave them in the form for a week for greatest stability. I believe it takes this long for the epoxy to fully cure. If you are sanding epoxy fills after a day (which most of us do) it might be a good practice to avoid the dust.
I could be wrong on this, so if someone has better information, please feel free to set me straight.

Sounds like very good advice to me. I've also heard that the epoxy hardener in particular is very toxic, so use the proper logical safety precautions; nitrile gloves, proper ventilation, etc.

I am having very good results using Z-poxy finishing resin in two coats: a wash coat of shellac, then full strength for the first Z-poxy coat, sand back to wood (try to not pull the Z-poxy out of the pores, i.e. sand lightly), another wash coat of shellac, then the second coat of Z-poxy thinned with some ethanol, sand back again. Works like a charm. YMMV. Good luck.
