I am building my first guitar over in the 2013 builder's challenge. I am still working on my neck and am at the point of installing the truss rod. I have the LMI double action welded nut version. I have routed my channel slightly over a 1/16" deeper so I can install a spline over the top. Should I just glue this spline so it bonds to walls of the slot or should I use epoxy and bond it to the top of the rod as well? It seems like this may cause issues while adjusting the rod but I have no idea. Is there any other steps I should consider before installing?

My other non-related question is about the headstock veneer. Should I get my angle of where this meets the back of the nut pre-cut and use some sort of guide to glue this up against or should I cut this back after gluing? I am a handtool woodworker so this cut would be made with a handsaw and cleaned with a shoulder plane if I was to cut after gluing.

Both questions may be subjective from builder to builder but I'm looking for the best method for a hand tool based shop from others with experience.

Don't know about the rod, I don't use a spline.
I suggest getting the angle on your veneer before gluing. I use the actual nut as a spacer so the nut slot is perfect built in...

I do the same thing with my nut slots...I use a dummy nut to set the space.

Do NOT glue anything to the truss rod. If you need to, put a piece of masking tape over the rod to keep from gluing the rod. All it takes is a little bit of wood glue to hold in the filler. The filler is not particularly structural, and the rod won't function until the fingerboard is glued on....it will just bust out the filler no matter what you glue it in with. The filler just needs to be held in place. The fingerboard provides the structure.

I use epoxy to glue in the spline. I rough up all glue surfaces including the top the the bar on the truss rod with 80 grit paper and clamp the spline in place after applying the glue to it.
