My dad gave me this Stanley #5. He said it was old, but I don't know what old really means to him.

I've been online looking, but I don't really know enough to know what I have.
According to one site, because it has a raised ring for the knob

...and one patent date(U.S. PAT APR-19-10)

it is a type 14, made between 1929 and 1930. But I know there is much misinformation out there.

It needs a good cleaning and setting up, but, whatever it turns out to be, I will use it and cherish it. My father has stage 4 lung cancer, with 3 to 6 months to live, so it will be one of the last things he'll ever give me.

It looks like you've got a corrugated bottom, sweetheart no. 5. The Sweetheart logo was used from 1920-1934 (if memory serves me correct): looks like a really nice plane. If it's really off, you can true the sole, then sharpen the blade and get to work as it looks to be in very nice condition; the stanley label on the brazilian rosewood tote is almost always missing from years of use. It's also very cool that the Japanning on the body has remained in tact for more than three quarters of a century. I've been to the Blood and Gore site (used to have it bookmarked). It's an awesome resource. So is RexMill.com.
I've got a lot of work to do on this plane before I put it to use, but I'm used to that. I bought an old Millers Falls plane last year and I've been through this before.
Incidentally, the blade on this plane is still so sharp that if I'm not careful, it will lay me open. It'll get the Scarey Sharp treatment before I use it, though. Can't wait to start building with it.

Can't give many specifics other than that a number 5 with the corrugated bottom like that is referred to as a 5C. Also the Sweethearts are the more collectible of the Stanley's aside from the Bedrocks. Would be proud to own that one, and even more so having it come from your father. I've really been moving in the direction of using more hand tools as of late. That should be a fine user!

Todd, thanks, I'm on the fence about a blade swap, as this one is in good shape, and funds are (always) low. But I do use my planes for heavier work, so if I do swap, I'll get a Hock. I think the stiffer blade will make a lot of sense. Not certain where to get a chip breaker, but I think I saw aftermarket ones at Lee Valley.
