If I can get someone to sponsor the Prize . How many " Newbies " would be willing to Dive in and give this a try ?

I might be persuaded to jump into the fray, if I'm not disqualified by a) one false start on an acoustic, b) just about to apply finish on my first telecaster, and c) I have been collecting materials, so wouldn't need a kit...

Rules are just an Idea at this point, I would say that it can be arranged to make it fair ... say newbies , kit build , any experience ( like you ) scratch build . ( limit 1 build experience maybe ) Lets see what response we get .

I think this is a great idea and one I would like to follow! May I make some suggestions? I hope so because I am going to anyway.

Defining "newbie" could prove to be a challenge in and of itself. I think that the spirit Of Wuds suggestion is to give people who are wanting to get their feet wet a good (and fun) excuse to go for it. Perhaps it would be best to ask new and aspiring makers (especially all you lurkers) to add a post here describing your experience level and goals (probably other data points I am not thinking of). Soon we will be able to form an opinion of what definition for "newbie" fits most of the interested parties and is as fair as possible. I think Wud is on the right track with setting up some sort of handicap (no kit or something) to people who have a little more under their belt.

I love the 6 month time limit. I see these threads as a great opporitunity to get real time help on an early build. That can really help a person get up to speed.

As for the prize, it doesn't have to be one person offering up one really big prize. People could offer to send smaller value items to the winner. A low grade back and side set here, a less than perfect top there. . . I'm sure many of us have wood that is usable but we keep passing up; could make for a good second guitar.

I would be interested in the challenge as I have limited experience (I have one build so far which I haven't quite finished and didn't document)

To be in the challenge I would start a new build I would like to be a full time builder one day

Ok not sure that I qualify but Ill toss my name in the hat along with some info and let the challenge officials decide if I fit the bill. If not Ill wait for the next round.

Ok I am a machinist/foundry worker and have lots of experience with manufacturing though all of that is geared toward metal and just decided to try with wood and building guitars a little over six months ago. I built one guitar a EIR/sitka last year and it took five month or so. I did not use a kit here is a couple pics of it so you can judge my abilities




Since completing that I have begun work on a curly maple/sitka that is a little over half way done. The box is closed and ready for bindings and the neck is about 75% here are a couple pics of it. (it was also not a kit, I hate the limitations of a kit haha)



well thats all the experience I have. Ill let yall decide if its too much. I could always have a handicap like building with one hand or blindfolded, haha. Anyhow if I fit the description Ill participate, if not ill cheer from the sidelines.

I like the idea as I am starting my first ever build this month. Not a kit though. Would that qualify?

Yes it would qualify , does not have to be a kit , Just can be to make the process less daunting for some to try.

I might even see if I can get ( 2 ) sponsors , ( 1 ) for first build ever and ( 1 ) for any newbie with 2 builds or less .

I am sure I can work out the details , we need participants .

I would definitely be up for this.
Still currently in very early stages of build one, but already thinking about no.2!
Don't think I'd use a kit either as I already have some materials and not much money..
Anyway, if I qualify, I'm in.

Great idea, Wud! I think this might be the time to get my feet wet! I entered the 2012 Challenge, but work didn't allow me the time. I have cabinet/furniture building skills, so I would be doing a scratch build. What would the start date be? I'm intending on taking the summer off from cabinetry, so this might give me the time to get finished. Hmmm...what to build?

Under the two builds or less I like to get in. The usual limitations on materials/cost?

I just started scratch build #2 on December 26. If I qualify, I'll play.

Actually I wasn't going to put a $ limitation on this for the sake of the kit builders. I have never built a kit , so I need to know what a reasonable kit cost would be . Little research i guess

I am roughly 2-3 weeks from starting my very first build, I am now building my woodworking bench. I will not be building from a kit but would like to enter.

I took a four week course in the summer where I built my first under the tutelage of a professional (Jeremy Hamm at Pembina Valley Luthiers). Does that disqualify me?

I'm close to starting my first solo build. It won't be a kit.

I'm not sure if i can finish in 6 months (I'm still tooling and jigging up) but I think I'd throw my hat in the ring.

I've been here for a bit, and know many of you from other sites. I'm finishing my third at the moment, but have only been at this since last February.

Nice turnout so far Glad to see we have so many new builders entering the fray.

I was debating whether to sponsor one of these anyway, so since I'm not qualified to compete, I'd be happy to put up a prize of some sort. Not sure exactly what... I've got a good stash of guitar woods and inlay materials to pick from, but living in USA, Lacey Act pretty much prevents me from mailing most of it outside the country.

Tools are good for newbies though. Maybe a wooden plane for jointing plates? Certainly improved my life when I made one, and I've been meaning to make a couple other planes for myself, so I could just do them all at once.
