Hi everyone - I'm in the process of working out the details of my first guitar commission with a customer and I've suggested a laminated, either 3-ply or 5-ply neck, on his guitar. I'm looking for some good quality pics that I could show him of what these types of necks look like. I've had limited success using Google images and I was wonder if anyone would mind sharing a few pics so that I can show my customer?

Thanks in advance folks,
Rob

Some of the nicest laminated necks IMO are Jim Olsons pretty much standard 5pc lams (Mahog/maple/rosewood). A lot like Brians, but 5pc. Very rich looking.
Google "olson neck lamination" images & you'll see what I mean.

I'm not being very delicate about these laminates artistically. Or maybe others think they look nice. I find them a little..."blunt" now.

Here's my last. Sadly the Tasmanian Blackwood wasn't wide enough by itself, so I did a simple 3-piece with Tasmanian Oak....

Mine are actually 7 pc. lams, here's a closer look at one being carved

When I do a laminated neck, I use my standard purfling as a design key, so my necks match the body detail. So this is my usual 9 piece laminate, using curly sycamore (that's maple to those of you on the wrong side of the pond) with ebony/pear/ebony/sycamore/ebony/pear/ebony as a centre detail.

Geez I can't believe it's been just over a week since I asked this question! Time has been flying by this December - especially when I'm building two guitars! :)

I really appreciate the pics guys. This will give me a nice assortment of pics to show my customer.

This might be useful in terms of showing your customer what NOT to do. Actually, it's a very nice lamination of three pieces of black walnut separated by two veneers of mahogany. The mahogany stripes are much more apparent when holding the guitar, but they barely show up in a photo. The matching mahogany veneer sandwiched under the burl layer on the back of the head is a little more visible here. So...if your customer is interested in a "showy" lamination, this wouldn't be the way to go. If the customer wants subtlety, then maybe.
