Hey, sometimes I get lucky! A friend works in a local foundry, and rescued an old vise from the recycle pile. It came out of the foundry's pattern shop, and the reason it was being tossed was the mounting bracket was broken. He thought it might be something I could use, so he saved it for me. I threw it in the back of the truck at night, then the next day I gave it a good look. YeeHaa!

This is a genuine Emmert's pattern makers vise. The big one, that weighs around 87 pounds. I scrapped some of the old paint off and found a few casting numbers. Don't have all the specs on it yet, but I believe it is a Turtle Back model, a T2. My best guess at this point is that it is around a hundred years old, give or take a decade or two.

I need to restore it, then make a frame strong enough to hold it to attach to my current bench. Yeah, I'm excited over this thing!

bliss bliss bliss

Hey Phil-

That is a sweet find! You owe your buddy a few beers for that. Google your Emmert vise and you will find a few pages showing how to restore these wonderful vises.

Good luck-

Sweeeet. [:Y:] [:Y:]

I'd have to build myself a proper bench to go with it (instead of using my workmate).

My wife would be "you got a free vise and you are spending HOW MUCH on a bench to go with it?"wow7-eyes

Great find! I have a Veritas Tucker vise which was designed based on the Emmert. I don't use it a lot for lutherie, but it's darned handy for a myriad of other woodworking tasks.

Hey, thanks everyone for the shared enthusiasm! A good vise and a good bench were high on my list of upgrades, but my last layoff before the BIG R hit put an end to all that. Which makes this one worth all the more to me.

I do have a few other oldies. My joiner is a '53-'54 model King Sealey. Another impressive piece of cast iron, and still works well. Don't use it that often, but it's great when I do.

My dad has a really neat joiner, it's an old Craftsman. As in the first model Craftsman made, back in the 1930's. It still works also.

Hey Wud, you got a laugh out of me with that one! But for what it's worth, my new vise is NOT the most valuable thing in town. My old car IS.

hint: It's a Spyder. [:Y:]
