I was researching Larson Brothers guitars and came across this picture on the Larson Brothers Guitar Registry page. As the name suggests, it's a big boy at 21" wide!!! I always enjoy the somewhat flamboyant and humorous style of the Larson Brothers, as is the case in this guitar. Enjoy...

Shape kind of reminds me of one Haans shared with us some time back.

Big Bimbo was only 18" though............

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Well that looks....interesting. I can't say I like the sound much. Sounds like it can't keep up with that picking speed

I agree with Quine, I don't care for the sound at all. It is interesting to see a box that big and not hear much bass.

Never mind that the Big Boy, what's going on in your avatar photo? Looks like something that I've seen before.

It's a Manson style headstock for my first bouzouki build. Sort of a modern interpretation of a 17th century lute headstock. Here is my latest. I'll post a thread about it when it's done. Should be next month some time.

Well, then you would probably want to make the neck larger. Where it could shine is in low open tunings.

That thing sure makes the player look small!

Thanks! Looking forward to it. I thought that maybe it was an Orpharion or an early 1900's German Lute-Guitar.

I really mean no disrespect to the Larson brothers, but...does anyone else think that looks hideous?

I knew there was something I didn't like about it but couldn't quite put my finger on it.

Can't say I care for it much.

Hey, Larson, Knudsen, Dyer, et al, were on the cutting edge of creativity and inovatotion. Some of their ideas exist to this day, and some are being rediscovered. But fair enough, the Big Boy design is not a great idea. I'm guessing that the idea was to create loudness.

We all stand on their shoulders.
