when i'm hand stitching leather corners i often double thread, but generally i find single is strong enough

You should use nylon thread for the leather - it will hold up and no need to double.

Has anyone ever tried a turnip ?

I'm fortunate enough to have an amazing baker for a wife. So I enjoy them probably a little more often than I should. If you don't have that luxury and there aren't any French bakeries up in Canadia, then I guess you'll have to go mail order. I can't imagine that they would travel well though. Sorry, bro.
