What solvent will remove white out without harming a nitro finish?

You can probably take it off with your fingernail.

No real story. A friend of mine added position markers on the edge of his classical fretboard with white out. I offered to install something better looking. I just don't want to ruin the finish. i.e., I want to avoid any major finish work.

I used to use it and I just popped it off with my fingernail when it started to break down. It doesn't stick very well, and leaves no residue. Razor blade would work fine.

I use it - and after a few weeks of playing it wears away - just learn to play classical for a few weeks.

By the way - try the fingernail before resorting to a razor blade.
