Does anyone still make fretting hammers with that hard, translucent amber plastic, or are they all that solid orange plastic now? It seems like the old ones were harder and worked better. I really don't like my new one at all.

I have a deadblow too, and I really wanted to like it, but it doesn't seem to really set the fret well without hitting it excessively hard. Maybe your Stanley's a bit harder. I'm thinking of chopping off one face and threading it for a plastic face.

I think this is exactly what I'm looking for. It's just like the old hammer I had.

I have some hammers that came from Brownells that have a brass face on one side and a hard white plastic face on the other. Pretty much all I use for guitar work. I originally got them for gunsmith work.

Yeah, the dead blow hammer definitely seats them, but sometimes it feels like I need to hit a bit harder than I really want too. I can also see that the face of the hammer is all chewed up, and I haven't even used it that much. With the harder plastic, I just go back and forth with really light taps, and the fret gently works it's way down. I think that maybe I just have a crappy dead blow hammer made out of material that's just too soft.

i picked one of those up about 2-3 years ago, at a Mendards. the brand is Stanley.

I kept running out of budget when I was about to buy a deadblow or soft head hammer so in the end I just made one myself with a solid lead head. So far I'm satisfied with it.
