Hey all. I just went to re-up on bold-line, black/maple/black purfling, which has been my go-to purfling for some time, only to find it discontinued through LMI. Blarg! I was not expecting that! If anyone knows where I could get my hands on a big bunch of it, of the .020/.020/.020 variety, I'd be much obliged.

That's "black, white, black." The OP is looking for "black, maple, black." Subtle but important difference.

I assumed the white that LMI was using was maple.
But likely pear....

If you have a table saw and thin kerfed blade (I use my fret saw blade), they are super easy to make. I buy black died veneer and curly maple veneer (http://www.certainlywood.com/), laminate them and then rip them on the table saw. Cheap, easy, and allows you to make whatever combos you want.

Hmmm, now I'm questioning my memory. I thought for sure what I used to get was designated as black/maple/black, but now I'm not sure. Can anyone confirm the type of wood LMI uses in their PFL2A?

It's white fiber, basically thick paper, and pure bright white. Maple is much more warm and natural looking. They used to have 10/40/10 and 10/10/10 black/maple/black on limited quantity, but it looks like they're out. I wouldn't mind having a few 20/20/20 strips, but I've never seen them anywhere. I think my ideal sizes would be 10/20/10 and 20/40/20, though.

Another I really like is black/koa/black. And pear. But I don't have any of either I need to buy more species of veneer.

Since I started ordering from them 10 years ago LMI has always listed their PFL2 strips as BWB but made of black veneer and "white" wood, so if you ordered before Iwould order again. (I just cecked an old 2001 catalogue just to be sure and the descriptions are still the same) It is their fine line purfling that uses very white veneer.

Dennis, the bold multi-line is described as black fiber and wood for the white, it just doesn't say what type of wood. The stuff I've gotten previously is definitely a warm, golden color. Actually it looks exactly like the stuff John linked to at Grizzly.

Quite honestly, it just never occurs to me to source wood products from SM. I wonder if theirs is essentially the same as LMI's PFL2A. Thanks for that, Todd.

As suggested, if you need a good many, get them directly from Gurian. They make the purflings that LMI and SM sells....

If you're stuck and need some sooner than Gurian can supply you, I have a good bit of blk/maple/blk as well as maple/blk/maple in 20/20/20. I switched to white fiber instead of maple many years ago, and no longer use them, so if you're interested, I'll count up what I have and we can work out a fire sale price for it all.

EDIT: I also have many, many sticks of maple/blk at 20/20, too.... And if I remember right, some blk/maple/blk/maple at 20/20/20/20.

I use a lot of Gurian product. It isn't that costly when you see the value of the pile you get. Go for a group buy.
