Yeah, they have some really great and hard to find stuff. Trouble is, their shipping is extremely high, and the best stuff is usually just one item out of a batch when they update, and is gone within minutes. So, you gotta check frequently throughout the day every day, and be ready to jump the moment you see something, and hopefully know a few older things in the inventory to tack on with your prize to offset the shipping cost :)

Did you get this best of the best set from that batch? I almost bought it myself, but then decided against it since I'm particularly depressed by the deforestation going on in the Amazon. But at least I managed to save the photo before it was gone :P

Chris - I agree, those Amazon sets were a bargain. I nabbed the two sets below as soon as I saw them listed. I'm going to swap the backs and sides so they match a bit better. Really nice stuff. I love Gilmer!

Well I'm flying up there next week, I hope they have some more.
What's up with their high shipping? wow7-eyes I couldn't believe it when I got my f'boards, but it is fine quality.
I suppose the shipping is fine compared to air-fare.

I would say this has something to do with it:

"Handling: We charge a $10.00 handling fee per package to cover the shrink wrapping, cardboard sheet, cardboard boxes and banding we use to make sure your order is not damaged in transit. It takes a lot of time to package your order well enough to survive the rigors of freight travel."

One set left!

I think the guy who manages the luthier wood is named Marc.

You can call & ask for him. They have more than what's listed on the site. For example, when I spoke with him I think he said they had something like 400 sets of African Blackwood.

Thanks for posting Chris. I snagged one of the remaining sets. I've been on the lookout for some dark coloured Amazon rosewood for months, but most I've seen has been kinda pale & washed out looking. Gilmer's stuff looks great. Not bad pricing either!
Cheers. Dan

I've purchased allot of wood from them over the years.
Seeing the pics of it helps allot.
All of it has been as good as they say or better.

Yes shipping is expensive-especially when you buy heavy woods.

I spent the morning rummaging thru stacks of dark wood at Gilmer's today. I love places like this that have been in business forever, and have huge slabs of old wood in their stacks. It is a real learning experience when you realize how little you know about wood.
Mr. Gilmer talked guitar wood with me for about an hour, then I had to quit talking & figure out what to buy.
I don't recommend shopping in person here if you want to limit your purchases. When buying top quality wood is a "no brainer" there really is no justification to hold back.
I forgot to take a picture.

It wasn't too much, a figured Honduras double neck blank, a "plum pudding" Sapele set, and two dalbergia maritimi fret boards, but even that was more than I planned spending "vacation money" on.

See you later in "Redwood country".
