From double sided tape, of all things. I've actually never had this happen before on a new build so now I'm scratching my head trying to figure out the best way to fix it. It's not terribly deep, but I don't think I want to sand down to it.

My current plan is to simply ignore it for now, and follow my normal finishing schedule. After spraying the first couple of coats of lacquer, I'll drop fill with CA, level and continue. Does that sound right?

I think it's about the only thing you can do. Try reproducing the tear out on a scrap off cut and go through your finishing procedure. See how it looks. I've had pretty minor tearout on figured Maple and simply filled it (eventually!) with Shellac. After leveling it was so difficult to see that you required a magnifier.

Sand it out.

Can you recover the chip that was pulled out? If so, fit it back in and glue with HHG.

After the fact but I keep a little squeeze bottle of acetone handy for tape release. One little touch of the acetone and the stuff falls off.

Nah...I didn't notice it until now. I've never had a problem before, even on spruce. Maybe I left the tape on over night, or something stupid like that. I'm not even sure why I had tape on there in the first place, actually, as I would have had no reason to rout it it. I know I did something unusual and dumb on this one.

It's just as well...the top cracked when I glued it up (it's a drop top electric). I'm at about a 50% success rate getting tops to bend around the body like that. I'm experimenting with top thickness, kerfing pattern/depth, body contour, clamping cauls, etc to get the process under control, with varying degrees of success. I'll finish this guitar, fix the tearout/crack and just use it as a prototype/loner, but I'm getting ready to put this on the back burner and concentrate on other stuff for now. Maybe it's time for a vacuum bag system, as some have already suggested.


Oh! I know what I did. It was stupid. I had to put a backer on the top when I was cutting the relief kerfs with my router to make everything lay nice and straight, and to get the router bit more than 1/16" off my bench top. I was use a straight edge as a guide, and clamping it all down to my bench on each pass. I was mashing the maple into the tape, and for a long time too. No wonder the thing took a chunk off! That was DUMB. LOL.
