I will be on the lookout for cedar top sets with 800 grain line per 4-1/2 feet. ;)

Seriously though, what a shame. That was a really old tree!

I'm glad to see the park staff was on their toes. Not!

Ya, 16,450 hectares should be pretty easy to patrol.....givin most of the forest is very dense and the terrain is pretty rugged...with other crown land areas surrounding the park, it's no surprise that something like this can and has happened, and will probably happen again. Actually, BC is known for it's old growth forests and many of them are protected but it's very hard to patrol a province and all the protected forests which is bigger than the size of Texas.

This park has many 700-1000 year old Sitka spruce trees which are protected. It's really an amazing park but it is quite big and with mountainous terrain it would be quite hard to watch it all.

Am I alone in thinking that I quite like the idea that the wood is going to be used for roof tiles or whatever rather than just let it die a natural death and rot back into the ground? idunno

I like that it's going to be used but it shouldn't have been cut down to begin with. There's plenty of cedar in BC that is used for roof shingles, legally.

Wow...I didn't know folks would pay that much for shingles with over-the-top tonal characteristics. idunno pfft laughing6-hehe

Meh, the tree was 800 years old; right at the end of its natural lifespan (look it up).
It SHOULD have been cut down and sold/used by the "powers-that-be", but the illegal loggers got it instead.

Who got the money for it is an entirely separate issue IMO.

On a windy day the house sounds like an orchestra (tuning, of course, so I hope you like concert pitch!)

I guess this sort of begs the question, when is a tree left alone to be admired for its natural beauty and shear size and when is it cut down to be used for some other purpose? See, the forest industry in BC is pretty huge and a couple hundred thousand protrected trees in the province really won't make that much of a difference in the market for lumber.

Those trees out there in the Redwood forest that people drive their cars through all year long are proably right at the end of their natural lifespan and dang there'd be a lot of awesome guitar tops to be had from those trees, but...... ;)

Ive been to Walbran & Carmanah Parks many times over the years (I met my partner of 20 years on the West Coast Trail)- theres only a couple roads in and out - also the coast i.e. someone could come by boat... that said even remote cameras could keep a decent eye on whats going on out there via roadways..... This is a new phenomena up here as someone recently felled a ancient maple for "guitar tops" - man what dirtbags....
These are people who wanna cash in on the selling of luthier grade woods... not luthiers themselves - but it gets reflected back on us when in the article its says that the tree was harvested for "guitar tops".... as the one I read did!
Theres so many large cedars out here man - why steal from parks - you could just as easy find some just as old on decommisioned logging roads(not that Im advocating stealing any wood - its just that people go there to enjoy the woods, in parks) ... but idiots will grab the easiest stock they can find...
Sad
Cheers
Cwood
