I was just about to pull the trigger on an order from Alaska Specialty Woods, and then I got paranoid. I think these are the good guys, but I know there is a similarly named one that is to be avoided...
Have I picked the right Alaska Wood company?
Please Advise...

Alaska Specialty Woods are in fact the good guys.

Alsaka Tonewoods (run by the McCray family) are the guys in the black hats ...

They are good folks to deal with and if you want Sitka they have some nice stock. Especially bearclaw.

Alaska Specialty Woods is my preferred place to get sitka. Great quality.

Brent at Alaska Specialty Woods is indeed a great guy to work with.
As for the other said place, it would be really great if nothing more was said about it.
Every time they get brought up and bad mouthed I start getting
emails of the unfriendly type.

Thanks [:Y:]

You've got it, but I'm going to take the opportunity to compliment Brent, too. The first time I ordered from him, he contacted me out of the blue a few days later just to be sure I was happy with the order. It goes without saying that I was happy with the order AND with his service. A great deal of his stock comes from standing deadwood and I like that. I haven't bought big quantities because I'm a hobby guy, but the quality has been superb and the prices very, very reasonable. I think anyone can be confident of satisfaction when they deal with Brent.

 If you go to the website of Alaska Tone woods you get changed to a new website-Celticmusicwoods.com-are these the guys to stay away from? I contacted him about yellow Cedar a while back. Maybe I'm glad I am still thinking about it.

Is it Alaska Specialty Woods that attend the GAL conference (booth between the two main doors of the upper hall)? If so, I can vouch for the fact that their wood is AWESOME!! For the past two conferences I have come home with stacks of exceedingly high quality soundboard material from them, including some incredible bearclaw.....and all at very fair prices.

Cheers,
Dave F.
