Anyone build with it? If so, what are your thoughts on the tonal and working characteristics? How does it bend? Hibdon sure has some nice looking sets of the stuff. Thanks.

Our local metro hdwd has gorgeous dk brn chocolate peruvian walnut for $5 bd.ft.

Nice! Are Peruvian and Mayan walnut the same thing? I had in mind Peruvian is a true walnut but Mayan is not, but I could be wrong.

Charlie I don/t know , but I resawed that peruvian walnut ,it resaws readily, has abt the same density as h. mahog. it is much lighter IMHO than our local walnut , seems easy to carve , has a beautiful dk brwn colour , and a nice shimmer or chatoyance when hand planed . I plan to build a classical with it using carpathian spruce top and peruvian walnut for the back and sides cheers.

the top of my headboard at home is peruvian walnut, it is deep, dark chocolate color and mine's got some nice quilted figure to it. It really takes an oil finish nicely, really shows off a lot of depth. It is very dark though so it doesn't show in all lighting. It was very light and machined like a dream, except you'll get a very dark tan from all the sawdust. I've never heard of Mayan walnut though I wouldn't be surprised if it were the same thing.

They sure don't look the same...

Sorry charlie I have no pics , plus i don/t know how to post photos wood is in the bsmt.Perhaps you can google peruvian walnut and will get some photos .The wood grows all over central and s. america it is a tropical version of the walnut genus

Last summer I built a harp ukulele with the Mayan walnut I got from Hibdon Hardwoods. It was easy to work with and had, as someone else has mentioned, some nice flame (so much so, it reminded me of koa). Here are a couple of photos:

Myan & Peruvian are different.
Peruvian is genuine Juglands, Myan is not.
Peruvian is darker, softer, works well, bends easy, great tone on small guitars, which is all I know about.

David - thanks for the info. I did a little digging and came to the same conclusion about Peruvian and Mayan being different. Both seem very attractive though.

I have some curly Tzalam that I got from Jeffries in Knoxville. The tap tone is very similar to true walnuts ( Juglans.) It has a waxy/ stringy texture and is not very fun to work with.

Here's a shot of a Tsalam set I picked up from Hibdon last summer at the GAL convention. I'm just now finishing up a baritone commission made from fiddleback koa that looks very much like this...

Hi, David! I've been busy with school, but no more...I just retired (after 32 years of teaching), so will have more time now...I've just started a second harp uke, since I sold that first one to a fellow teacher (the school's Ukulele Club advisor). This one I plan to keep!
