Hi!

I'm in a hurry to finish a guitar for a customer, and I just realized that I order the wrong truss rod. How stupid I am. I ordered a 1/4 hexa nut instead of an allen key. I have no time (nor money ) to order another one now.

That said, I need to get information on the stewmac hexagonal truss rod wrench, to know how big, long and deep to carve the truss rod access.

In fact, I would just need the external diameter of the tool!

Won't a regular hex nut driver work?

Mine is going bigger at the bass. I was wondering if the stewmac's one would be thinner. I don't want to over size the pocket, since it is a fender style headstock, angled. It would looks odd.

Get the right truss rod. Every time I try to rush something it ends up causing me problems.

Get a nut driver they are thin wall and should be available in all metric and inch sizes at a good tool store or online. I would find the wrench you will use and then size the opening to clear it. A normal socket will also work but the wall thickness is much thicker than a nut driver.

You've got your problem solved, but I'll add this for those who have not yet encountered this problem. My nut driver set, and my socket set are definitely thicker-walled than the Stew Mac wrench. Further, they drive in-line with the shaft, while the Stew Mac wrench works with a nearly perpendicular handle. This could be an important issue to some builders who don't have much clearance where their adjustment slot exits their face veneer. I am sure there are nut drivers out there with thinner walls, but when I first encountered this problem nearly 40 years ago, I had to grind some of the wall thickness off one of my sockets. Moral: If you're going to use that hex adjustment nut, it's probably a good idea to order the tool, too.

Even better: I found a friend that have the right truss rod in stock.

But, I have to agree that buying the tool at the same time would be a great idea.

Glad you got the problem sorted, as a repair man I have every truss rod wrench that StewMac stocks, and they're really nice tools. It's rare that I have to use any other tools to adjust truss rods, the SM ones will get into just about any guitar.
