for the dufus of the month award although the perpetrator is neither a luthier nor a repair tech.

Got a call from a friend of mine Monday evening. He has two or three guitars, the nicest of which is a Larrivee' OM-03 that I had recommended to him when it was for sale locally. Since it's purchase I've walked him through an undersaddle installation and helped him make a bone saddle for it. He seems pretty determined to learn to learn to care for his own instruments as far as set-ups and semi-simple mods are concerned and I've applauded those efforts. He's certainly sharp enough if maybe a bit impatient at times.

The call consisted of "can I bring this guitar over before I ruin it?" I said sure. Click. I knew he sounded mad at himself. About 30 minutes later he pulls up and heads straight for the shop rather than the house (he's been there enough times). I walked in behind him as he was taking the Larrivee' out of the case. The first thing I noticed was a hole for a strap pin on the bass side of the neck heel. He explained that he had drilled the hole there by mistake and didn't realize it until he brought the guitar in and tried to use a strap for the first time. He then unscrewed the pin, went to Home Depot, bought the smallest dowel he could find and glued and tapped it in. He even tried to match the stain and did a decent job of that. Not how I would have approached it but not a bad repair either.

He then laid the guitar down, got his drill back out, and drilled another hole through the bass side heel and through the dowel he had just tapped in. [uncle]

That's when he called me. I told him that if that is the biggest mistake he ever makes he will do well.

Jay

Judging by history, I'll bet he just might. ;)
