Dadgum, Chris. That's a nice design.

Personally, I have so many things I'd rather be doing, but I'm going to try to buy a workshop this weekend. According to my wife, we're trying to buy a house. But after showing her my top choice (which had a nice, big workshop with a gambrel style roof, she commented that there were no interior pictures of the house. "No?" I answered. "I didn't notice that."

I traveled four states looking for the right property ("right" meaning...."it had to have a shop I could work with"). The house was incidental...though I had to pay lip service to the notion of a "house"....in order to have a peaceable "home".

I have been searching for a house shop as well, the way property values have tumbled in this area, renting a house with a 2 car garage is cheaper then a commercial space. I don't want to live there though, I would like to have a lutherie vacation rental type place. www.shastaguitar.com

I have been working on my 3 axis mill contraption. I worked on the pin rout function. Here is a 3 layer pin template for the tone control cavity, the pins have variable height to work with the layers.

I finally made the basic drill press table insert that Charles Fox showed us in his class. I cut the square out on the 3 axis mill, what fun.

Chris, nice design! I really like that.

I've got to get back in the shop after finishing #10, 3 weeks ago. Got a body waiting for binding and the neck to build. Gonna re-top #2 and refinish over the next few months too.

I have been real busy with 3 builds at once, Dreadnought, Bloodwood Om wedge, and Black Limba 12 fret. I was able to get the and bridge ready and will start the finish process next week. The 12 fret is about 1 week behind and the wedge will be ready for finish by the end of the month. I will probably have pictures of the other guitars the next time we do a what are you doing thread.

I got tired of finding just the right thickness shim for my classical bridge drilling jig, to set the angle of the string holes through the tie block. The jig holds the bridge at a 10 degree angle and I’d shim the front edge to get the exact angle I wanted, generally somewhere between 7 and 8 degrees.


The shims worked OK but seemed a bit crude so I added a couple set screws to replace the need for shims. The jig can now easily be adjusted between 0 and 10 degrees.

I've finally had some time to get to work on my wedged baritone. I finished voicing the top, and glued it on. I got the bindings in. They went really well around the top and back, but not quite snug on the sides. Then I got the neck carved and fitted. This is the first time I've gotten to share a neck joint photo. All my others have chisel marks in the shoulders, as this is the first time I carved the neck off the body. Never going back. If all goes well, I'll be designing and making the bridge and the headstock tomorrow. I really must make sure I remember to put the truss rod in before I glue on the fretboard.

Well I spent time putting in my rosette on my bubinga build but ended up cutting all the way threw the top on part of it. but I was able to recover and get the rosette in

I found out our house (with my shop) will be sold (we have been renting) so I am scrambling to find affordable space somewhere here in Boston. In the meantime I have been plugging away on a few guitars and more machine upkeep. I have been making mounting posts to mount indicators on the cross slide of my old lathe which has been fun. I also have 2 guitars in end or near end stages. A ziricote wedged CLM and a simple (for me) Red spruce and Cuban Mahogany CL. I strung up the CL and am in love.

Well, between finishing instruments, I have finalized my peg head shape prototype for my guitars. I have #1 and #2 underway with the help of Mike Franks (thanks buddy!) and Stephen is working on inlaying a nice pearl "J" for me. ( Stephen Rocks!) It turns out that my cursive "J" is a "J" from the vertical and horizontal position. That was a surprise to me!

Yes, the Cuban is from Mike (I think we are talking about the same Mike, I purchased it from someone here at the OLF). The back is almost perfectly QS with silking all the way across and that big ropey figure, it is really beautiful wood. Plus it is from Florida so technically domestic, which was a hope for (most of) that guitar.

I have several sets of Mike's Florida Cuban mahogany but haven't built anything with it yet. It's nice to see how gorgeous it can look under finish. Really nice wood for sure!

Closed up #28 yesterday. Someone is actually paying me for this one!

I use hot hide glue for everything inside the box. Hide glue makes it remarkably easy to clean the squeeze out. It gels in about three minutes to a consistency that allows it to peel right off. It almost comes of in one long string. Any remaining residue cleans up easily with a chisel or knife.
