Seems a 6" belt sander would be a useful tool for building. I've seen some folks use this for building necks etc.

Any negatives on the Harbor Frieght version of the 6" X 48" sander listed here:

I have a nice Rockwell 12" disk sander so the 9" disk sander is not much use to me. This HF unit is listed in our local Craig's List for $100 OBO is the reason I'm asking. I normally avoid Hf tools but this really isn't a precision tool.......so if I could get it for $75 -$80 maybe it would be worth it.

Thoughts?

I had something similar and I did use it from time to time but, I'm a really big fan of the Rigid oscillating spindle sander here: http://www.ridgid.com/tools/oscillating ... /index.htm

They go for $199 and are super useful. There's a little vibration in the thing but, it is sanding, not inlay or something like that. I use mine all the time.

Kuddos on the Rigid Oscillating Spindle Sander!

I have one, and seems like every small woodshop that I've seen, has one of those!
A guy has a youtube video and he shapes his necks with this sander!

Hmmm.......IIRC, John has a video using a sander sike the one above from HF to make necks. I already have the Delta Oscillating Spindle Sander like this one......but not quite like the Home Depot sander.

I've got the Ridgid and use the spindle sander with a block of maple clamped to it to use as a fence for doing things like bridge wings or a round volute on the neck. Clamping the fence to the table is a bit cumbersome, looks like it would be really easy with that Delta. I don't think I've ever used the belt sander on the Ridgid, but like you, I've got a nice big disk sander for the flat stuff.

I can't say anthing as to the quality of the HF sander, but my old Delta is one machine that I use a lot for various tasks in addition to a spindle sander. If I had to have one though, it would probably be the spindle sander.

Darryl 3 weeks ago when i was tearing apart my delta 15 yr old 6by 48 I bought the hf version of this tool .I really like it.The chinglish instruction is hard to follow ,use photos.So far i like it .If you google around you will get others opinions .I bought a clayton oscillating sander 15 years ago great tool.

I have the Rigid, too, and use the belt sander all the time. Can't do a lot of things a larger belt/disk unit can do, but it gets a lot of use.

I'll add my vote to the Rigid. I use the belt sander mostly.

I have a jet 6X89 edge sander I picked up for $200 on Craigslist.
I use it all the time.

I have both and use both frequently . I do alot of shaping on the spindle sander .
