I can't tell what type of wood this is.
It came from the scrap bin at a wood store.

Looks like some kind of pine, no?
It smelled a bit like pine when I cut it, but I am not sure.

Can you identify it?

it looks quite a bit like spalted Fire wood to me.

Florentin,

In order to identify a wood, close-ups of the grain and end grain with a fairly accurate color representation would be helpful.

A description of the properties (heavy, light, stiff, soft, dark, light, streaks, knots, etc...) would also be helpful.

A better, close up picture would help a lot....
especially showing the grain on the wood....

If it was a reject out of a pile of 2x4's, and it smells like Pine when cut - then it's probably either pine or spruce....

Pine. The large resin canals are the giveaway. Doug fir also has large resin canals, but it has a different smell, and the heartwood is reddish.

It must be pine from a very small tree and was written previously, only useful as fire wood. But can someone enlighted me, what are those bright green streaks?
Florentin, something I've learned fairly recently is that when looking for wood to use on guitars only go for something that is either already quarter sawed or you can re-saw into close to quarter sawed. I come across a lot of reclaimed wood and initially I was excited by everything other than pine. Now I'm more discerning and also inventive in wood choice. Looking at the growth rings of that piece of wood you can see that it's flat sawed from a young tree.

Not going to use this on anything specific.
I am attempting my first build, and was practicing cuts on some throw-away wood.
I have not really used woodworking tools before, except for a hammer to put up framed pictures in our house, and well, that's about it.

I bought this piece of wood for $0.56 while picking up some tools at Home Depot.
I was practicing on it with a new jig saw I bought the other day, and ended up practicing cuts for the neck.
I'd rather practice on this than on more expensive woods.

I FIND IT MUCH EASIER TO PLAY BACH THAN TO CUT WOOD TO SIZE, but I'll get the hang of it

Yes, I am a newb.
Yes, I don't know jack about building guitars.
Yes, I came here to learn.

Considering I am surely going to make lots of gross mistakes for the 2012 challenge, I am having second thoughts about posting there. I can only imagine the comments, considering some of the replies on this post.

You know the old saying: "There are no dumb questions, only dumb..." well you figure out the rest.

Thanks for all the help so far. I appreciate it.

Now I have to go, because my wife is screaming at me for putting this "dirty piece of wood" on our kitchen countertop

You kinda have to have thick skin to build a guitar in public, and that is basically what you are endeavoring to do by participating and posting in-progress build pictures.

As to whether you participate here, you have to ask yourself if you are getting anything out of it (and I think the answer is clearly 'yes').

For every jackass that gives you a hard time (hopefully in jest), there are a handful more folks who will try to be patient and endeavor to answer your questions and give constructive suggestions.

Don didn't mean any harm. Just his way of saying -------- Take a look at your first picture. Did you really expect anyone to identify your wood from that?
Newbe or not just a little common sense will tell you the answer is no.
One of the most important things about posting in a public forum like this is that you have to be able to take constructive critcism. If your able to do that then go ahead and post away. You'll get lots of good help here as John Arnold's reply shows.
