Hey all, I've got an idea for an inlay, but I'm lacking some material. The plan is a coral snake rosette, using alternating tiles of African blackwood and bloodwood (or padauk), with natural sapwood edges to provide the yellow stripes. I have the blackwood, but nothing red with sap, so I can't do the cool natural edges thing (plus I'd have to cut a bunch more pieces :P).

So, I need a little piece of either bloodwood or padauk, at least 2 1/2" long, with at least 3/8" of width sapwood, and 7/8" of width heartwood. Anybody have such a piece they can part with? I'll pay shipping plus a few bucks. Padded (or even plain) envelope ought to be fine to ship cheap, I can just glue it back together if it gets cracked. $5 flat rate box is fine too.

Thanks in advance!

Hey Dennis,
I've got some bloodwood you can have.
It's 3/32"x13/16".
I could fill up an envelope,
or a flat rate box.
Want it?

Hi Dennis,

I wouldn't use Padauk if I were you. In a year of two, it will turn a boring brown color and your lovely snake inlay will look sad. Bloodwood will keep its nice red color for many years. I'm looking forward to seeing your work!

Cheers,
Dave F.

Yeah, I was thinking like Dave on this (frightening).
And, as clever as using sapwood might be, I think you'd be better served trying a third wood, like Satinwood for the yellow parts.

Thanks guys!

Alan: Those pieces are 13/16" total width? If they have the right proportion of heartwood to sapwood, I can make that work. Here's the pattern, with the 4 bloodwood tiles outlined (including their sapwood part). They're about 1 1/8" long, but I could use 13/16" and just do more, smaller stripes.

Ernie: If Alan's stuff won't work, I could swing by on Saturday and dig for some padauk pieces.

Dave: Indeed, I would prefer bloodwood for the long term brighter color, but it's hard to find with sapwood so I would settle for padauk. The top is redwood, so the darker color of aged padauk should still look ok. Certainly better than it would next to spruce.

Steve: I was actually thinning down a piece of satinwood for the stripes, when I had the idea to use the sapwood :) The color was just a little too intense yellow, and the shiny texture would be a bit striking compared to the more flat blackwood and bloodwood. Blackwood sap is just the right color, so I thought about just cutting pure sapwood tiles for the stripes, but then thought having every other border be a natural edge would be nifty.

Ah, I already have bloodwood with no sap, so that's not going to do me any good. Thanks for the offer though. It is odd how rare it seems to be to find bloodwood that hasn't had all its sapwood cut off. Hardly any images on google search either, but judging by this one it looks like the color is close enough to that of blackwood sap, with a nice sharp transition to heartwood, so it should look good with the alternating pattern.

Or maybe I will just cut separate blackwood sap tiles and skip the natural borders. It'll be more consistent looking than alternating natural and cut transitions anyway, plus the brighter red than padauk, and I can get started right away.

Thanks for the offer and invite, but I ended up deciding to go with the bloodwood I have for the brighter color, and cut separate tiles for the stripes. More consistent looking than the alternating natural and cut borders between colors too. I'll be sure and bring the guitar over once it's done though :)

No worries dennis. You made the right choice artistic wise . I have a slotted headstock in the bsmt with a padauk veneer so far still orange , Even pernam turns a dark orangy brwn. I have thin tiny pcs of orange veneer, that is the only wood here that stays the same colour. Look forward to seeing gtr. Went to that mill I mentioned in grandview yesterday got osage orange h. locust sycamore and persimmon. Hope to see a large beautiful spalted sycamore log being 1/4 sawn on the bandsaw mill tomorrow. You might check out his stock . He will allow you to cherrypick, a piece 1/4 sawn stock. and he/s very reasonable , but the wood is usually wet unless kiln dried cheers ernie.
