I have gotten a LOT of emails asking how you sign up for the classifieds.
I admit I have not made this to obvious. You have to go to the forum index then look for the Classifieds section in the index, click on the link to go to the sign up page. Way to many steps.

So
I will get a link up in the main page section above soon. In the mean time, here is a short cut.
http://luthiersforum.com/forum/subscribe.php

Sorry about the confusion :?

It has seemed peculiar to me that potential buyers must pay to read the sellers' ads. I have never seen classifieds anywhere that did this. It reduces the value of the classifieds for the sellers.

Well said Howard. If I had anything to sell I`d want everyone to see it.I say open it up for everyone to see with maybe a small fee to post something to sell. That`s the norm.

+1 on the sentiments expressed above. I totally agree with "pay to play", just not "pay to drive to the game". [:Y:]

PS..Hi Lance!

I realize that the fees help support the forum but I must agree that it would be better to have the posts available to the public and need to be a member only to buy or sell. I don't think that it will reduce the memberships in classified that much and maybe even increase it with people being inspired to join after seeing the posts.

Peculiar? With a place that has the Padma ? Really! idunno

As I'm sure you all know, it isn't just the buyers that pay, it is both buyers and sellers - any one that wants to go into the classified section.

I like it. It gives me a better chance to pick up good stuff at a deal if I am not competing with so many people. Most items seem to sell pretty quick, so it does not seem to be much of an issue. Most items offered are from builders who need a few bucks, or changed their mind about a particular set of wood or tool. There have been one or two entire shop sell offs.

No problem paying a small fee. Still have not figured out how to sign on.

laughing6-hehe about the peculiar comment.

I also agree with your sentiments about the fee, Steve. I just renewed my Classifieds membership and it's not a big deal IMO. I haven't sold anything yet in the Classifieds but I have sure bought a lot, and if I compare what I've paid for those items to what I would have paid elsewhere, I've recouped the cost of membership many times over. In addition to that, I feel I am in debt to Lance anyway for all the knowledge I've gained here, and the fun I've had, so I see the fee as a small price in the overall scheme of things. I certainly owe far more than I pay here when I look at the big picture. [:Y:]

I'm certainly not looking back. I have gotten more than a dozen good deals in the classified that waay more than paid for the opportunity to look, sell and buy. I have sold nothing. It's like being a member of Sam's Club or Costco or something.

Lance,

You've been asked a very reasonable question by several longtime, well-respected members of OLF regarding your policy on charging potential buyers a fee to simply peruse through the classifieds. You haven't responded to them, but you have responded to Ernie with - "did you get my email?"

I'm curious as to why you have ignored this question and by extension these members? If it's a subject you would rather not discuss, a simple - "I would rather not discuss this OLF policy" - would be a bit more helpful than just ignoring members and their reasonable queries with regard to this OLF policy. Your silence in this case seems very odd.

Respectfully,
Randy

There was a pretty good discussion of this subject before the Classified Forum was opened. Maybe Lance feels like it has already been discussed ad-nausea m!

Sounds like a very good possibility, but I guess we'll never know.

By the way, when did this discussion take place? I'm relatively new to OLF, have the same sort of question, and likely missed that discussion. Reading Lance's thoughts on that topic in an earlier discussion would likely help me understand the rationale behind the current policy. Thanks for your help.

Do a search for "Classified forum" with LanceK as the author.

That's one. I think there was another, before it was opened up.
