Wes: Don't think they are an absolute necessity. Have made guitars without but not for a while.I think they both do thier primary job,help to stop cracks from extending. Fabric does very little to stiffen sides where as wood does. The wood can be made stiff or flexable. I use wood myself,and I approve this message.

Pro's: help stop cracks. Con's: make crack repair more difficult.

I used to use cloth tape, then I started using spruce now I don't use anything.
