The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

That is NOT the way to post in error! Any PROFESSIONAL luthier worth his salt knows that the ONLY way to post in error is like *THIS*! You shouldn't try to post in error anymore until you've studied under a REAL luthier who has posted in error for a thousand years or so. Maybe Mario or Rick will chime in here and back me up!

I'm in on discussing this. I think it is well worth the discussion. And I am willing to work with anyone who wants to partner up and make a jig and tutorial for it

I think we should discuss whether discussing this is a good idea first. I'd hate to waste any valuable forum bandwidth unecessarily.
