Do any of the prized lutherie woods still come out of Madascar legally?

I know nothing, but in my search, Mad Rosewood isn't protected by any international convention, cites, etc.
This was probably "illegally harvested", stolen by pirate wood cutters.
Stopping illegal cutting is exactly what should be done to protect any resource.

as far as i know - and i´m talking from memory, so please correct me if i´m wrong - there is a Malagasy government ban on both logging and exporting of all madagascar rosewoods (there are about 50 specimens of the dalbergia genus in madagascar alone, although only some yeld timber - as you all might know). OTOH, the government has proven intrinsically incapable of enforcing its own bans and corruption historically abounds , so - bottomline with madagascar rosewoods - it should be very difficult to trace your wood.
