All, I've been thinking a lot of the medallian series rosette idea that John Mayes is using (note: all credit to John for this idea), and was thinking that instead of using a medallion in the rosette, actually cut out that section as a second sound hole and add the mosaic in the rosette ring. The fingerboard would follow the contour of the soundhole's - with a matching headstock profile.

Take a look.

Is this idea crazy?
* how would the structural integrity be?; reinforcing the inner ring would be a challenge.
* is the addition of a second sound hole make a major change to the sound? This is right under the middle transverse brace (a classical).
* this will/will not work (because...)
* this is a great/bad idea (because...)

I'm working up a sample in some basswood to not waste a top, but wanted some input on the concept in principal.
Thanks
Steve

I think the idea is very interesting. I agree that structural integrity is going to be a concern. I would definitely try it on some scrap to test the idea. I would also suggest using a cross grain patch to reinforce the back of the mini sound hole. Cool idea. I would love to see how it turns out. And yes, it is worth trying.

I think it's a neat idea! Give it a try.
