So, I've been looking around for places to further my edumacation. Lots of courses for a guitar in a week, or basic stuff etc. I'm looking for courses specifically on voicing the tops. So far I've found Somogyi's, which is out for me, and Brian Galloup's 4day voicing seminar which seems like just what I want to know. But before I commit to anything, I wonder can anyone suggest other places that teach top voicing that I'm not aware of?

Check out Charles Fox, he teaches advanced building techniques which I am sure involve voicing among other things. The other one is Harry Fleischman, his website says he is not teaching right now due to a big project, but he does teach a class on voicing. Fleischman likes to use an access door on the guitar and do a final voicing after the guitar is strung, I think Fox does this too.

I am signed up for the ASL Contemporary Guitar making class starting in 2 weeks, I am so excited that I can't think of much else.
After you take a class though, you will have to change your OLF name, as you will no longer be meddling or foolish.

Have you read Somogyi's book? Lots of good info in there.

And don't forget John Mayes' advanced voicing DVD.

What are your criteria? Why is Somogyi's out for you? Geographic issues or other?

I did the ASL Contemporary Guitar making class in 2003. I thought it was tremendous. It'll shave 5+ years off your learning curve. Take your camera and take lot's of notes.

Somogyi is out because I don't groove with his teaching style. I got a lot out of his books but I just don't see myself taking his class. I'd have benefitted from the ASL class many moons ago, but I'm up over 50 guitars now so an overarching course would be a lot of repeat. I'm after specialized teaching in a very narrow spectrum of interest. I believe it will be Brian Galloup's Dynamic Voicing Seminar. Expensive, and a long way to travel for me. It's more the latter that makes me wonder if there is something similar closed to the west coast...

+1 for Charles Fox and ASL. He went in to great detail on voicing when I took the 2 week course with him a few years ago. His comments when I voiced my top was simply "sweeeeet"! I must say that was quite encouraging. Another source is Kent Everett's voicing video in which he offers great detail on voicing (at least that's what I've heard). John Mayes' voicing and advanced voicing videos are also excellent.
