I removed the back from my 63-65 guild m20 with a modified pairing knife and some heat.
I am trying to remove the bridge plate using the same method but to no avail. I guess I'm going to make an aluminum caul to heat up and place on the bridge plate.

However, is it completely mad to consider just putting the guitar on my mill and cutting the bridge plate off?

Well, I answered my own question. I put it on the mill and removed the bridge plate quite nicely. I finished up with a chisel.

ha ha. I think you may have missed the first part of my post, where I mention removing the back. The back was already coming loose so I took it off to remove the bridge plate.
I agree, getting my 1200lb mill inside my m20 would be a feat. With the back off the M20 though, it did a excellent job and the new maple bridge plate is already in place, waiting on the new bridge to be completed.
