How much do I trim the heel ??
Is there a traditional length ??
I know, dumb question....

pretty standard to trim it where you have marked. Right at the bottom of the binding. Then add a 60-90 thou cap.

Gregg: In my mind the important thing to have is a transition from the line of the edge of the binding into the line of the edge of the cap without any overlap one way or the other. It is easy to over shoot the mark so proceed carefully.

Flush with the binding joint is correct for Martin style.
Also trim it so the cap is parallel with the back, not perpendicular to the sides. I lay a straightedge on the back and just eyeball it.
