Everything I have seen and used in the past has been spruce but I bought a few sets of pre-cut bracewood a few years ago (and just opened them - yeah, I don't build much!). The sets included an 1/8 x 1 x 18" piece of flatsawn maple for the back joint reinforcement. I could understand if it had the same grain orientation as a spruce strip, but I don't see the benefit of a flatsawn piece.

Ever seen this or used it yourself?

i usally use the cutoff from mt back and make a strip from it so the material is the same as the back . Just my personal choice and have nnever had any problem with flat sawn "yet"

The strips, if quartersawn, need to be perpendicular to the grain of the back to work well (lest the split with it during a bump). A flatsawn strip avoids that problem, and given its use and size there's no reason to prefer QS except for looks.
