Anyone ever done Koa purfling?

We're looking for a source and wondering about bending for side purfling.

Any experience or recommendations?

Thanks

I have a lot of .rosewood/koa/rosewood purfling from Gurian (.020/.020/.020). It's pretty easy to work with. I have a LOT of it, and I'd be happy to part with some if that's similar to what you're looking for.

James, thanks. We're actually looking for b/koa/b to use with some flame koa binding.

I'll check out Gurian.

Check with Shane at High Mountain. He has single koa strips at least, and he'd most likely be happy to glue up some sheets and strip them out for you as well. In fact, I'll probably order a few of those myself if they go onto the menu :) (but not immediately, since shipping is expensive and it will be a while before I have an order built up)

Paul, Here are a couple of photos of an Aussie Blackwood classical from a few years ago with 5-line B/Koa/Yellow/Koa/B purfs both top, sides and back. Bindings were Cocobolo. The Koa was 0.020" from a sheet of veneer that I had. I was pleased with the outcome.

I'm sure I can talk to Shane about it - but do you think it will handle a side bend to be used as side purfling?

Yes, it will. I recently finished a pair of OMs and used the b/koa/b for the sides. Its not easy, but what is...

Alain that is beautiful! I think though what Paul is asking is how it works on the side and in the waist.
I know mine was a bear to do, but it did make the turn at the waist.
