Some time ago I posted about my desire to buy the oscillating tool that was on sale at Canadian Tire for half price. The thing was, although it seemed like a neat tool, I couldn't envisage a use for it in guitar making. Well I took Howard's advise and bought it anyway. The purpose of this message is report that I have found a use.
One of the features of the tool is it's ability to do plunge saw cuts. That's what makes is useful for doing trim work around the house. Because of this ability, I have come to think of it as sort of power chisel. On my latest build, I used it in this manner for the initial carving of a heel (at the point I would have started with a chisel). I sawed off relatively big chunks in place of chiseling away many smaller pieces. In about ten minutes I was at the point where I had to switch to a regular chisel and I was much closer to the point where I would switch to a rasp. So it saved me a little time and sweat. Probably I'll find more uses as I go along. At least I found something.
