I am with you on this one, Filippo. I am always looking for great new ideas for how to efficiently outfit my shop. My hand planes have a home but I am not really satisfied with it. New ideas for better digs would be nice.

I keep all my bench planes in a cabinet (along with most of my "non-instrument maker's" hand tools) , so its pretty compact. I find that special compartments for each plane on a shelf is not necessary, just a stop at the front of the angled shelf is sufficient. The vertical stored long planes have holders at the top, one is barely visible under the shelf. I also had to make holders at the top for the metal smoothers, as unlike the woodies they would otherwise tip sideways when stored this way.

I need to make something for my planes but the trouble is I only have a No. 7, No. 4 smoother and block plane so far, so I would not know what all places I would want to make for others.

I like your cabinet Arnt, adjustable and lots of room for any additions.

just wondering what you do about rust proofing/prevention
did you ever try lining your shelves with oiled leather ?
ive got a nice beer fridge with glass doors
and i was thinking of turning it into a tool chest
any tips would be great

If you keep your shop in the 40 - 50% RH range, you aren't going to have much in the way of rusting issues.

i havent yet got any humidity guages
im still tooling up/making jigs in my folks freezing shed
I did notice that my luthier tools dont rust in my old bedroom/tool storage area though
thats where everything nice is going from now on

Early in my career I moved shop and a box with planes in it got placed on a wet floor for a moment, and the contents got all rusty, with the worst rust being on a limited edition earl LV plane, before they did the Veritas thing. Ever since them I have redoubles my efforts to buy only bronze, or wooden planes. Mostly wooden planes. So much nicer. Of course it would be easier to not hire people who put your plane box in water. But then they were pretty impressive movers overall, you never know when something is going to get those darn things wet.
